Yale Beats Temple In Double OT
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It took a while, but Yale’s persistence and hard work was finally rewarded Tuesday night against Temple. Conner Lachenbruch scored on a penalty kick with 1:33 left in the second overtime period as the Bulldogs knocked off the Owls 1-0 on an unseasonably mild night at Reese Stadium.
Yale fired 17 shots at the Temple goal before Lachenbruch’s game-winner.
“I’m very pleased for our guys,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. “They got what they deserved.”
The Bulldogs were awarded the penalty kick after Henry Albrecht was tripped in the box. Lachenbruch then stepped up and calmly fired a shot into the top right corner.
“It was well taken,” Tompkins said of Lachenbruch’s winning shot. “Conner has great composure. It capped off a strong night for him.”
Lachenbruch was active at both ends. He helped a Yale defense post its second shutout of the season and played a key role in generating offense.
Goalkeeper Blake Brown was forced to make only one save, but it was a big one. It came when he dove to his left to snare a hard shot from Jared Martinelli with two minutes left in the second overtime.
Both goalkeepers received some help from the goal post in the game. Yale’s Tyler Detorie hit the side of the post in the final second of the first extra period.
Temple, meanwhile, hit two posts in the game. The first came off a header from Dan White with 11 minutes left in regulation, and the second was midway through the second overtime when Olli Tynkkynen fired a shot that first deflected off a Yale defender before glancing off the post.
Yale finished with an 18-10 edge in shots.
“We created chances throughout the game,” Tompkins said.
The victory was the first of the season for the Bulldogs, who have played much better than their record indicates but have struggled to score goals.
Yale (1-8-2) travels to Cornell on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
