NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It took the Bulldogs a little while to find their rhythm Tuesday night against Quinnipiac, but once they did, it was smooth sailing. Melissa Gavin scored late in the first half, and Frannie Coxe added a late insurance goal as Yale blanked the Bobcats 2-0 on a warm night at Reese Stadium. “We usually have to connect on four or five passes in a row to get into the flow,” Yale head coach Rudy Meredith said. “Once we do that, we always play better.” It doesn’t hurt that Meredith has brought in a freshman class filled with goal scorers. All six of the Bulldogs’ goals on the season have been scored by newcomers, including the two against the Bobcats. “They are certainly doing more than I thought they would,” Meredith said of the freshmen. “I didn’t think they would have all of our goals after six games, so I am very happy with their performance.” The game was nearly 13 minutes old before the first shot was fired by Yale’s Enma Mullo. Quinnipiac (0-3-1) had the first good scoring chance. Crystal Burns was left alone in the right side of the box. Her shot got by Yale goalkeeper Adele-Jackson-Gibson, but a Yale defender cleared it away before it went into the net. Gavin had plenty on the shot that gave the Bulldogs the lead. She took a pass from Mullo and blasted a shot into the top corner from 12 yards out at 35:34. Yale controlled play for most of the rest of the way and finally tallied the all-important second goal with just under 10 minutes left. Mary Kubiuk sent a long cross that found its way through the box to Coxe, who fired it in from 10 yards away. It was Coxe’s first career goal. The Bobcats’ best chance of the second half came when Kat Young corralled a loose ball at the top of the box but saw her left-footed shot go just wide in the 73rd minute. Yale’s defense did an outstanding job containing Quinnipiac’s leading scorer Furtuna Velaj, who was limited to one shot. “It has to be a team effort to stop a player like Furuna,” Meredith said. “You know she’s going to beat somebody at some point, so you have to have a second defender around the ball.” Yale (2-2-2) outshot the Bobcats 15-6, and the Bulldogs posted their third shutout of the young season. Yale returns to Reese Stadium on Friday to host Vermont in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
