Yale, Cornell Play Scoreless Tie
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – There were a lot of positives for the Yale women’s soccer Saturday vs. Cornell. The Bulldogs had a big edge in possession, a big edge in shots and a big edge in overall play. The final result, though, left a bad taste in their mouths as Yale was forced to settle for a 0-0 tie on Alumni Day at Reese Stadium.
The Bulldogs (8-3-2, 2-1-1 Ivy) outshot the Big Red 28-5.
“Very frustrating,” said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. “[Our players] left it all on the field, but we just could not get that first goal.”
It certainly wasn’t for lack of opportunities or effort. Yale had a 9-1 edge in shots in the first half, a 13-1 advantage in the second half and six of the nine shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods.
“We need to concentrate as much on finishing as we do on creating chances,” Meredith said.
In addition to the high-number of shots, the Bulldogs also had 13 corner kicks.
Cornell goalkeeper Meghan Kennedy contributed to Yale’s frustration. She finished with eight saves.
Alyssa Fagel wasn’t nearly as busy in the Bulldogs’ goal, but she stopped two shots to post the shutout, Yale’s sixth of the season.
There were a large number of former players on hand to celebrate Alumni Day.
After playing three straight home games, the Bulldogs have their next three on the road, starting Wednesday at Howard in the final non-conference game of the season.
Yale returns to Reese Stadium on Nov. 4 against Brown in the season finale.
