Yale Cruises Past Albany 4-0
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale’s response to a rare loss this season was really impressive. The Bulldogs, who fell to Harvard on Saturday, erupted for four first-half goals en route to a surprisingly easy 4-0 victory over Albany on a chilly night at Reese Stadium.
Yale had control of the game throughout, outshooting the Great Danes 30-4.
The Bulldogs (8-3) have won six of their last seven games, while Albany saw its six-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
“I’m really happy with how our team played for the full 90 minutes tonight,” said Brendan Faherty, The Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “I was most impressed with our student-athletes focus prior and during the game, which isn’t easy in a mid-week non-conference game during the Ivy season. We had great individual performances all over the field highlighted by four different goal scorers and earning a shutout.”
Yale had a big edge in possession from the start but didn’t break through until 23:47 when Ellery Winkler settled a cross from Lydia Shaw and fired a shot into the top corner.
Then, the goals came fast and furious. Shaw chipped a ball over Albany goalkeeper Sophia Chen at 28:44. Noelle Higginson followed with a blast from in front at 34:31 after Emily Yin sent a ball into the box. Yin also set up the fourth goal, sending a long ball forward to a streaking Saje Brar, who finished the breakaway at 42:21.
“One of our goals tonight was to be better on the attack on the flanks, and it was good to see three wingers stepping up and scoring goals,” Faherty said.
The Bulldogs continued their domination in the second half, outshooting the Great Danes 15-4.
Goalkeepers Alyssa Fagel and Simone Eligon combined to post the shutout, Yale’s fourth of the season. Eligon, a first year making her first career appearance, made the only save of the game for the Bulldogs.
In all, 19 different Bulldogs saw action.
Yale is back to Ivy League play on Saturday, hosting Dartmouth. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
“We will enjoy this win for the next day and then put all our attention into a really dangerous Dartmouth team,” Faherty said. “We are excited to be back at home and look forward to another competitive Ivy game.”
