Yale Routs Saint Peter's 8-1
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It took Yale about 27 minutes to solve Saint Peter’s off-side trap Tuesday night at Reese Stadium. After that, the flood gates opened in a big way. Seven different players scored as the Bulldogs cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Peahens on a cool night at Reese Stadium.
Saint Peter’s did induce Yale into 11 off side infractions, but the Bulldogs still managed 27 shots.
“You have to be patient and not force the issue,” said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. “Otherwise, you’ll be off sides all the time,”
Three of the goals came on what were essentially breakaways.
Mary Kubiuk led the onslaught with two goals. Kristen Forster added one goal and three assists, while Meredith Speck also had three assists. Anne Song scored and had two assists. Muriel Battaglia, Melissa Gavin, Shannon Conneely and Juliann Jeffrey also had goals.
The eight goals were the most in a game for the Bulldogs since a 9-0 win over Wagner in 2002.
“To get eight goals is very rare,” Meredith said.
The first goal actually didn’t come as the result of Saint Peter’s trap, but instead was off a corner kick. Frannie Coxe sent a perfect ball into the box, and Battaglia managed to head it in at 27:17.
Forster then scored her team-leading third goal at 40:08. Georgiana Wageman sent a ball forward, and Forster outraced a Saint Peter’s defender to the ball and broke in alone.
One minute later, the Bulldogs struck again when Song sent a ball forward to Forster, who crossed it to a wide-open Kubiuk.
Yale (3-3) broke it open with three goals in a six-minute stretch of the second half. Gavin tallied first at 53:00, and then Speck sent a perfect pass forward to Song, who split the defense and slipped a shot past Saint Peter’s goalkeeper Caitlin Hoffer. Conneely, a freshman, scored her first career goal at 59:20.
The Peahens (1-7) finally got on the board when Greta Vogel scored at 67:10, but Yale answered just 15 seconds later. Paula Hagopian dribbled down the left side and sent a perfect cross to Jeffrey, who tapped it in. Hagopian also assisted on the final goal of the night. This time she found Kubiuk, who scored from a difficult angle.
Yale outshot St. Peter’s 27-14 and had a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
Elise Wilcox started in goal for the Bulldogs and made two saves in the first half. Rachel Ames came on for the final 45 minutes and stopped three shots.
With his team playing its third game in the last five days, Meredith shuffled his starting lineup. Jenny Butwin and Ana Keusch both made their first career starts.
“Everybody on the team now has had a chance to start and no one has started every game,” Meredith said. “Everybody has had an opportunity to show what they can do.”
The Bulldogs are back at Reese Stadium on Friday night, hosting Iona at 7 p.m.
