Yale Ties Colorado College 1-1
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale probably deserved a better result against Colorado College, but the Bulldogs were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw before a big Friday night crowd at Reese Stadium. Yale outshot the Tigers 18-5 and had a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
“We created enough chances that we could have gotten a second goal,” said head coach Rudy Meredith. “They are one of the better defensive teams we have seen and their goalkeeper made a couple of nice saves.”
There were certainly a number of positives for the Bulldogs, who are 6-1-1 on the season. Yale had a big edge in possession and limited Colorado College to very few quality scoring chances.
“I feel really good about our defense,” Meredith said.
Yale had the edge in play early, but it was Colorado College that struck first. Lauren Milliet played a ball into the box from the wing. It took a deflection to Catie McDonald, who banged it in at 31:29.
The Tigers’ lead, though, was short lived. Less than four minutes later, the Bulldogs got the equalizer. It came off a corner kick. Ciara Ostrander sent a cross into the box where Aerial Chavarin and Carlin Hudson kept it alive before Sarah McCauley fired it home from the top of the box at 35:15.
Yale had the far better of the play in the two overtime periods, outshooting Colorado College 5-0. Ostrander had the first good opportunity early in the first overtime but her shot from the right side of the box went wide.
Chavarin then barely missed the far post from the right side very in the second OT.
The Bulldogs have one more tuneup before the start of Ivy League play when they travel to UMass on Sunday for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Meredith specifically scheduled that game so his team would play on a grass field before the Ivy opener at Princeton, which will also be played on grass.
Meredith has been very pleased with his team’s play in the non-conference portion of the schedule but knows there are some areas to improve upon.
“We need to clean up our confidence with the ball,” he said. “We’ve had a few too many turnovers.”
