Yale Tops Delaware State 6-2
It was a big night for the Yale offense in Delaware. Aerial Chavarin scored twice and added two assists as the Bulldogs rolled to a 6-2 victory over Delaware State. Ciara Ostrander, Noelle Higginson, Lydia Shaw and Saje Brae also scored.
“The game got wide open for a period of time,” said Rudy Meredith, the Loring Family and Rudolph L. Meredith Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “It was nice to get six, and it was nice to have a variety of goal scorers.”
The offensive outburst comes at a good time for the Bulldogs, who host a Penn team on Saturday that has yielded only three goals all season and has yet to allow a goal in Ivy League play.
“Hopefully, this will give us some confidence,” Meredith said.
Ostrander got Yale on the board first when she scored from 20 yards out at 10:58.
Chavarin’s first goal increased the lead to 2-0 late in the first half.
The Bulldogs, who won their second straight game, added to their lead with a pair of goals in a 3:22 stretch early in the second half. Higginson got the first at 49:58 when she deftly angled a shot in from 25 yards out.
“That was the goal of the year,” Meredith said.
Chavarin then tallied her second goal at 53:20.
There were a few anxious moments when Delaware State scored twice in a 4:15 span midway through the second half, but Shaw (71:33) and Brae (81:42) sealed the win with late goals.
“Credit to [Delaware State]. They never gave up and really fought,” Meredith said.
Goalkeepers Maritza Grillo and Jane Buckley combined on the win.
Yale hosts the Quakers on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
