Yeomen Upset Nationally Ranked DePauw
Greencastle, IN – One shot was all it took for the Yeomen soccer team to pull off the upset, as they knocked off the 11th-ranked DePauw University Tigers, 1-0, Saturday afternoon. Oberlin is now 12-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the conference.
The Tigers entered the match, 11-1-1 overall, with their lone loss coming against the number one team in the country, Ohio Wesleyan. The Tigers' one tie was a scoreless affair against Kenyon, whom the Yeomen play in their last regular season game this year.
DePauw also entered the match ranked second in the Great Lakes Region, behind the Bishops, while the Yeomen ranked eighth in the region.
"This was a hard fought win for us," said Head Coach Blake New. "We played with poise and determination, but still have a lot of work to do going forward."
Through a first half that saw both sides struggle to create a real scoring opportunity, the Yeomen capitalized big time in the 43rd minute when first-year Dan Lev headed home the game's only goal.
Lev couldn't have asked for a better time to tally his first collegiate goal. Assisting on the score was Adam Chazin-Gray, which marked the second helper of the season for the freshman. Both players started the match on the bench, but were able to provide the scoring spark the Yeomen needed.
The Tigers outshot the Yeomen, 3-1, in the first half and also held an edge in corners, 5-1.
In the second half, Oberlin was able to buckle down defensively and withstand the onslaught from the Tiger offense. Through a chippy first five minutes, the Tigers were called for five fouls and Julian Gonzalez picked up a yellow card.
The hard play continued until the final whistle as DePauw totaled nine fouls in the second half and the Yeomen were whistled for four. Three Yeomen in total were shown yellow card cautions.
Goalkeeper Brandt Rentel was only forced to make one save, but had to stay on his toes as the Tigers earned eight corner kicks for the match. The shutout was the seventh of the season for Rentel, which leads the NCAC, and 15th of his career. He trails only the 16 of Clayton Combe '07 and 20 of Zach Lipshultz '11 on the Oberlin career shutouts list.
As a team, this marked the eighth shutout of the season, which ties them for the most in a season in program history with the 1988 and 2006 teams.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Yeomen as they travel to rival Denison University (10-2-2, 3-2 NCAC) on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. opening kick.
The Yeomen then face their biggest test of the season next Saturday, as they host the number one team in Division III, Ohio Wesleyan (15-0-0, 4-0-0 NCAC). First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Fred Shults Field.
