Oberlin, Ohio- The Oberlin College men’s soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Geneva College Golden Tornadoes on Friday night.
 
The first half consisted of strong defense on both sides. While Geneva had the edge in first-half corner kicks with seven to the Yeomen’s one, the stanza came to a close with neither team finding the back of the net.
 
However, Oberlin came out aggressive in the second half spending more time on the offensive end and controlling the run of play. In the 67th minute their attacking efforts paid off when senior Ed Vitoria broke the scoreless tie after heading in his first goal of the season off of a corner kick service from junior Ari Schwartz. The score marked Vitoria’s first goal of his career.
 
The Yeomen played strong defense for the remainder of the second half, preventing Geneva from evening the score. Junior goalkeeper Brandt Rentel had two saves in the shutout.
 
Vitoria had two shots on the day while sophomore Sam Winward added two of his own, both on goal.
 
The Yeomen look to keep their winning momentum when they go up against Heidelberg on September 2 at 7:00 p.m. on Fred Shults Field.
