Zapata Leads Falcons in 3-0 Win Over Regis
Senior Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) recorded five points on two goals and one assist to lead the Albertus Magnus men’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Regis College in the program’s 2012 season opener.
After 31 scoreless minutes to open the contest, Zapata beat Regis goalkeeper Stefan Todorovic on a 50/50 ball and found the back of the net to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead.
The Falcons outshot the Pride 9-4 in the opening half and went into the break ahead 1-0.
At the 51-minute mark, sophomore Richard Mitchell (Naugatuck, Conn.) put the Falcons up by two as he connected on a pass from Zapata for his fifth career goal. Zapata extended the Falcons lead in the 64th minute as he drilled a free kick past Todorovic for his second goal of the contest.
Todorovic finished the match with five saves, while the Falcons’ Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) earned his first shutout of the season as he stopped all three shots that he faced.
Stephen Zapata led the Falcons with five shots on the night, including three on goal, while his younger brother Alex Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) came off the bench and recorded three. On the night, the Falcons outshot the Pride 15-10.
The Falcons will play in their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 2 as they host Westfield State in a non-conference match-up. Game time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. on Celentano Field.
