Zerio earns ninth career shutout in draw
NASHVILLE, Tenn. –The Lipscomb women’s soccer team played to their second straight draw on Thursday night as the visiting Trevecca Trojans stopped the Lady Bisons barrage of shots in a 0-0 tie at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
“It’s one of those nights,” said Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien. “It’s a bit frustrating because you created the lion’s of share chances. We had some very good attacking soccer but were not converting those chances.”
The Lady Bisons (2-2-2, 0-0-0 ASUN) had 13 shots on goal but were unable to convert on any opportunity as Bekah Headrick of Trevecca (0-2-1, 0-0-0 GMAC) stopped all 13 shots that came her way.
Lipscomb goalkeeper Erin Zerio earned her ninth career shutout stopping all six shots she faced, pushing her within seven saves of cracking the top-15 on the Atlantic Sun Conference all-time saves list.
“I’ve got to tip my hat to Trevecca,” O’Brien said. “I thought they dug in and defended as a team incredibly well. I thought their goalkeeper had a phenomenal game and made some unbelievable saves.”
Caroline Chadwell had a golden opportunity fall inches short in the 27th minute. Chadwell beat the last defender and hit a slow roller past the diving Headrick and as the ball appeared to roll along the goal line a Trojan defender recovered and cleared the ball free.
In the 58th minute, freshman Molly Bray took aim with an 18-yard shot on the left side that Headrick made a diving play on getting just enough fingers on the ball to push it past the goal line for a Lipscomb corner kick.
In the closing minutes of regulation, freshman Alex Hickey took a free kick from 22-yards out that looked destined for the goal until Headrick appeared from nowhere to push the ball over the cross bar.
Chadwell led the Lady Bisons season-high of 23 shots as she contributed 10 shots landing six on goal. Fellow forward, sophomore Baylee Linnell added four shots while freshman Alex Hickey attempted three.
The Lady Bisons look to keep their three-game unbeaten streak alive as they travel to Tennessee-Martin on Sunday, Sept. 9 with a 1 p.m. match.
