HS: Spring state, region rankings, May 15
All around the country last week, teams accustomed to winning state titles added to their trophy case.
Here's a glance of the big winners:
Wando (S.C.) boys capped a perfect season as Charlie Marino's second-half goal gave the team a 1-0 state final win over J.L. Mann (S.C.), the pogram's seventh state title.
Tulsa Union (Okla.) girls won a third straight state title, ran its three-year mark to 53-1 and remained an outside challenger for a third straight SIMA FAB 50 national title. Tulsa Union entered the week ranked No. 6, and the Top 5 teams are still playing.
St. Pius X (Ga.) girls won a fifth straight state title and 11th overall, edging Marist School (Ga.) 1-0 and thus avenging its only loss of the season.
Westminster Schools (Ga.) girls scored all of its goals in the second half of a 3-0 win over Pace Academy for a third straight state title and 11th overall.
McIntosh (Ga.) boys snagged the program's sixth all-time state title when Logan Brown finished a corner kick with 81 seconds left in the second overtime for a 2-1 win over Clarkston (Ga.).
Oak Mountain (Ala.) boys received a pair of saves from sophomore keeper Xzavier Brown in the shootout as the team captured a third straight state title with a win over upset-minded Davidson (Ala.).
