HS By The Numbers: End of the Line
Soccer is not a stat-driven sport, but that doesn't mean it is devoid of numbers. Each Friday for the rest of the high school season, TopDrawerSoccer high school editor Sheldon Shealer will provide a glance at some of the recent numerical milestones. If you have a performance or milestone worth noting, email us at MILESTONES.
14 -- Number of league titles won by the girls soccer team at Northern Highlands (Allendale, N.J.) during the 16-year coaching career of Tara Madigan, who stepped down on Wednesday. During her 16 years at the helm, Northern Highlands also won seven state titles, including one this past fall, and Madigan rolled up more than 300 victories.
40 -- Length of the undefeated streak put together by the boys soccer team at Homewood (Ala.), a streak that ended this week with the team's 2-0 loss to Florence (Ala.). Homewood went 24-0-2 last year en route to an Alabama 6A state title. This year's team was 11-0-3 before the loss. Eddie Alvarado and Miguel Adame scored the goals for Florence in the victory.
43 -- Goals scored this past season by boys standout Ebubechukwu Ekpemogu, a junior at Garces Memorial (Bakersfield, Calif.). Colleges are taking notice. This past week, Ekpemogu earned Bakersfield Player of the Year honors and received his first NCAA Division I offer.
143 -- Number of career goals scored by Malaya Melancon, a junior at First Baptist Academy (Naples, Fla.). She netted 46 goals as a freshman and junior and 51 as a sophomore. She has a reasonable shot at 200 for her career with a big season season in 2019-20, which would make her the fourth Florida player to top that number.
