HS By The Numbers: Goals Galore
Soccer is not a stat-driven sport, but that doesn't mean it is devoid of numbers. Each Friday for the rest of the high school season, TopDrawerSoccer high school editor Sheldon Shealer will provide a glance at some of the recent numerical milestones. If you have a performance or milestone worth noting, email us at MILESTONES.
29 -- School single-season record number of goals scored by Francisco Medina of Coahulla Creek (Ga.). Medina's performance comes in the first 10 matches of the season, meaning the senior has about half a season remaining to put the mark well out of reach. He broke the previous school record with a five-goal performance earlier this week.
35 -- Number of goals scored this season by Midwestern State commit Jasub Flores, a junior, to break two of his older brother's school records. Carlos Flores, currently playing at Midwestern State, scored 33 goals as a senior in 2017 and ended with 60 for his career, both school marks at Arlington Lamar (Texas). Jasub Flores scored twice in Tuesday's match against YMLA (Texas), giving him 35 for the season and 62 for his career. Although a junior, Jasub is planning to graduate early and report to Midwestern State in the spring of 2020, and if that happens, he will not have a senior high school season to pad his career totals.
188 -- Number of goals scored by Palestine's (Texas) boys soccer season during its 28-match regular season schedule. That's an average of 6.7 goals per match. The team had four players scored 20 or more goals so far this season, led by 47 from senior Javier Leonor.
400 -- Longtime Tyler Lee (Tyler, Texas) girls soccer coach Chris Woodard collected win No. 400 earlier this week when Lee routed Longview 8-2. Alabama signee Carly Wyatt scored four goals as Lee improved to 17-3-1 on the season. Woodard, who played professionally in the APSL, sports a career mark of 400-144-39 in 26 seasons.
