The headline in a New York newspaper reads: "Bushen breaks single-game boys soccer record with 10 goals."

Now, the rest of the story.

Slater Bushen's 10 goals came in the first 28 minutes as Lyme (N.Y.) dismantled Sandy Creek/Pulaski (N.Y.) 23-0. 

That's right, 23-0.

New York, unlike other states, does not have a mercy rule to shortened lopsided games. In fact, this contest was 16-0 at halftime.

For the record, according to Syracuse.com, Bushen's performance topped the previous state record of eight, scored by Dennis Mills of Friendship Central, which was set in 1968.

Long-time New York high school sports columnist John Moriello blogged about the result, saying: "It's a sure bet that the 23-0 game will make it onto national sports websites and a bunch of publications by the close of business Thursday. Suffice it to say some people are going to come out of it looking pretty bad. No. 1 on the list of questions will be whether this game could have or should have been rescheduled as a scrimmage. ... Face it, this is a bad look for the sport -- and for all high school sports in general."
