HS: Berkshire, Nobles lead Prep Top 10s
No real surprise at the top of the TopDrawerSoccer Prep Top 10 list.
Berkshire School (Mass.) boys, winners of three Prep Top 10 national titles since 2012, and Noble and Greenough (Mass.) girls, also a past Prep Top 10 national champion, head their respective rankings this week.
But what follows is quite interesting and subject to a lot of change.
The No. 2 team on the boys side is [Northwood Academy ny-w] (N.Y.) and making its Prep Top 10 debut is a rare Midwest program, [Gateway Legacy Christian il-m] (Ill.). Now, here where the conversation starts -- should either be eligible.
Northwood, with 36 designated players, is playing an interwoven prep school/club schedule. The team is an associated member of NEPSAC but not competing for any prep titles since this is more like a year-round program. Yet, as a prep school, complete with PG players and games against other prep programs, it fits the mold -- for now. Why would that change? Well, if Northwood is not able to secure enough games to gain a fair assessment of the team, then it could be removed completely from the Top 10. By contrast, Gateway Legacy is playing a full schedule -- but its place is a bit of a mystery. This is the first year Gateway is playing against high school competition. The past three years Gateway only played college programs and could field older players. For this season, Gateway will be considered a prep school as it houses international players. Moving forward, it is possible that the school will go after full membership in the Illinois High School Association and thus become a FAB 50-rankable team instead of a prep program.
On the girls side, the current No. 2 and 3 teams are both former No. 1 teams this season. Two-time defending Prep A and Prep Top 10 champion Loomis Chaffee (Conn.) and [Buckingham Browne & Nichols ma-w] (Mass.) have now both lost to top-ranked Nobles.
