HS: Fall state, region rankings, Sept. 10
It was a banner week for boys FAB 50 Top 25 teams.
Not so much for the girls.
Boys Top 25 teams combined for a 35-1 week against unranked opponents resulting in no changes in the regional No. 1s. Only two states -- New Hampshire and Oregon -- have new No. 1s this week as it was mostly a status quo week.
On the girls side, the FAB 50 Top 25 will have a fresh look when it is released tomorrow, starting at the very top. FAB 50 No. 4 Northern Highlands (Allendale, N.J.) took out top-ranked Houston (Germantown, Tenn.) 1-0 in a clash of perennial national powers at the Rivals Tournament in Memphis, Tenn. At the same event, Collierville (Tenn.) proved its ranking with a win over Good Counsel (Olney, Md.). Meanwhile, Portland Jesuit (Portland, Ore.) thrashed Camas (Wash.) 6-1 in a Top 10 clash of Northwest title challengers and McDonogh School (Owings Mills, Md.) edged Episcopal Academy (Newtown Square, Pa.) 2-1 in a weather-shortened match between Top 10 teams.
McDonogh girls flip spots with yet-to-play St. John's (Washington, D.C.) atop the Mid-Atlantic region rankings, while Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) inherits the West No. 1 ranking following a loss by American Fork (Utah).
