HS: Fall state, region rankings, Sept. 25
When Conestoga (Pa.) boys played to a draw with Haverford School (Pa.) on Friday, that made for an easy switch atop the Mid-Atlantic Region today.
Archbishop Curley (Md.), which defeated Haverford earlier this season, moves from No. 2 to No. 1 in the region and reinforces its bid for national No. 1. Curley is the only new region No. 1 on the boys side, and they flipped places with Conestoga.
On the girls side, Whitman-Hanson (Mass.) swaps places with Central Catholic (Mass.) for the Northeast No. 1 ranking, following a tie by Central Catholic and Ohio power Strongsville. Strongsville tied both Central Catholic and Hingham (Mass.), and Whitman-Hanson had defeated Hingham only a week earlier.
THINGS TO WATCH
BOYS
* The focus this week will be on the Go 4 The Goal Fall Classic in Burlington, Iowa, where six SIMA FAB 50-ranked teams and two other regionally ranked programs will be tested in this first-ever event. The Go 4 The Goal event replaces the formerly popular Gateway City Classic, which was held at multiple venues in and around St. Louis, Mo. The ranked teams in this year's event, which is played at one facility, are: Bradley-Bourbonnais (Ill.), Dunbar (Ky.), Milwaukee Marquette (Wis.), Naperville North (Ill.), Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.) and Whitefish Bay (Wis.).
* Salesianum (Del.) is off to a strong start and takes a crack at a reeling DeMatha Catholic (Md.) side and an undefeated St. Augustine Prep (N.J.) team this weekend.
GIRLS
* The annual Medina (Ohio) vs. Strongsville (Ohio) regular season clash may simply be a warmup to a postseason rematch. In any case, if there is a winner, that team will have plenty of bragging rights. Medins and Strongsville are undefeated this season and their only blemishes are ties with out-of-state opponents.
* Like Medina-Strongsville, this week's Sacred Heart (N.Y.) vs. St. Anthony's (N.Y.) league clash might be the first of multiple meetings this season. Both teams enter the week with perfect records and national Top 25 rankings.
