HS: Final 2017 fall state, region rankings
Repeats and upsets seemed to be the theme of the week as the 2017 fall high school season drew to a close Sunday evening.
The final match played was the New Jersey Group 1 boys final, Pompton Lakes' 3-2 win over Glassboro, which ended in overtime -- and controversy. A handball call on Glassboro's keeper, for what was judged playing the ball outside the box, gave Pompton Lakes a free kick that Carlo Gonzalez cashed in for the game-winning score a minute in OT.
The last match with rankings implications had Kearny (N.J.) boys defeating Princeton (N.J.) for the Group 4 title to complete an undefeated season.
Around the country, Connecticut, Maryland and Massachusetts saw changes in the state No. 1 boys and girls rankings after six undefeated, favored teams all fell in state playoff action last week. Meanwhile, three Pennsylvania powers -- Moon girls and Conestoga and Lower Dauphin -- repeated as state champs to secure final FAB 50 Top 25 rankings.
