HS: Final Spring SIMA FAB 50
NEWS: More than four months after the release of the preseason SIMA FAB 50 spring rankings, the high school season has come to a close with Wando (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) boys and Barrington (Ill.) girls at the top of the national rankings.
Neither was a big surprise.
Wando started No. 2 in the boys rankings, behind Langley (Va.). At the finish, they flipped places with Wando claiming its first SIMA FAB 50 title and Langley checking in at No. 2. Overall, the top six teams in the preseason rankings finished in the SIMA FAB 50 Top 25. Final No. 6 McCallie School (Chattanooga, Tenn.), No. 25 Oak Mountain (Birmingham, Ala.), No. 15 Creighton Prep (Omaha, Neb.) and No. 11 River Bluff (Lexington, S.C) started Nos. 3-6, respectively.
On the girls side, eight of the preseason Top 10 teams finished in the SIMA FAB 50. Barrington started the year at No. 9 and worked its way to No. 1. Following back-to-back No. 1 finishes in 2015 and 2016, preseason No. 1 Tulsa Union (Tulsa, Okla.) finished at No. 2. Union's 1-1-2 run of national rankings marks the best-ever, three-year FAB 50 showing ever in girls soccer, regardless of season.
Now, with the school year finished, the focus shifts back to the fall season and a potential new look for girls soccer.
While the dust has settled after years of Development Academy boys no longer playing high school soccer, girls soccer might experience a similar fall out this fall with the created of the Girls DA. Regardless of who's on the field this fall, there will be talented players, outstanding programs, state titles won and a group of teams to celebrate in what will be the 19th year of the FAB 50 rankings.
BIG MOVERS: BOYS: None. ... GIRLS: Brighton (Mich.). Brighton jumped from No. 40 to No. 25 in the final rankings. The KLAA champion's season ended with a loss to No. 10 Forest Hills Central (Grand Rapids,. Mich.) a week earlier, but league first-place finish ahead of the state runner-up and a win over another state semifinalist justified the jump.
NEWCOMERS: BOYS: None.. ... GIRLS: No. 21 Marian (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), No. 49 Brookfield Central (Brookfield, Wis.) and No. 50 Powers Catholic (Flint, Mich.).
