HS: Lady Eagle, Day 1 Standouts, Results
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- Take away a 5-0 win over Ben Davis (Ind.), highly regarded Carmel (Ind.) girls soccer team has struggled to score goals this year.
The was the case again Friday at the Lady Eagle Invitational, but, like much of the season, Carmel prevailed.
Senior Elyse Reed summed up the struggle to score as the team not willing to take risks.
"When the ball came to me, it was the perfect time to take the chance -- I thought, 'I'm gonna take the shot.'"
Her effort ended up in the goal -- her first of the year -- to give Carmel a 1-0 win over Penn (Ind.) in the showcase game at the Lady Eagle Invitational.
Reed's goal came 4 minutes, 11 seconds into the match, and it appeared Carmel's offensive woes would be a thing of the past. Instead, the Greyhounds ended up relying on Emily Speidel and the Greyhounds' defense to hang on for the 1-0 result as Penn had the better of play and chances the entire second half.
In another major match on Friday, McDonogh School (Md.) simply ran past Toledo Notre Dame (Ohio) 5-0 behind a two-goal effort from sophomore Baylee DeSmit. McDonogh's team speed kept Notre Dame Academy under pressure all night along.
FRIDAY'S STANDOUTS
1. Jenna Chatterton, Noblesville (Ind.), Forward, Soph.: Chatterton netted four goals as Noblesville defeated Sylvania Northview (Ohio) 4-2. The last player to score four or more goals in a Zionsville Lady Eagle Invitational match was Cassie Amshoff, who currently is playing at Louisville.
2. Baylee DeSmit, McDonogh School (Md.), Midfielder, Soph.: DeSmit scored two goals only 33 seconds apart to turn McDonogh's 2-0 lead into a 4-0 rout in McDonogh's eventual 5-0 win over Toledo Notre Dame (Ohio). DeSmit sustained a knee injury shortly after the second goal, bringing an end to her night.
3. Claire Wilkinson, Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), Forward, Senior: Used her speed to run past defenders and create several dangerous opportunities. Wilkinson, an all-state pick last year, finish Hamilton Southeast's 5-1 win over Simon Kenton (Ky.) with a goal and two assists.
