HS: Lady Eagle Day 1 Standouts
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – And the Day 1 winner goes to Cincinnati.
The Lady Eagle Invitational brings out surprise results every year – usually with some region or state stepping up its game.
Mackenna Jordahl and Tamar Sella scored clutch goals Friday, leading a pair of Cincinnati programs to marquee wins. Jordahl scored the lone goal as St. Ursula Academy (Cincinnati, Ohio) edged Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers, Ind.). Sella, a freshman, delivered a perfect upper 90, far post shot in the closing minutes as Walnut Hills (Cincinnati, Ohio) stunned SIMA FAB 50 No. 49 Notre Dame Academy (Park Hills, Ky.) 3-2.
The only matches that played out as expected was the opener with SIMA FAB 50 No. 17 Brebeuf Jesuit (Indianapolis, Ind.) handling short-handed Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati, Ohio) 2-0 and the nightcap with host Zionsville (Ind.) defeating Sylvania Northview (Sylvania, Ohio) 1-0. Also, Indianapolis Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind.) held off SIMA FAB 50 No. 15 Brunswick (Ohio) and Toledo Notre Dame (Toledo, Ohio) edged Simon Kenton (Independence, Ky.) 1-0.
Friday’s Clutch Performers
Ashley Barron, Toledo Notre Dame (Ohio), Jr., F: Barron scored the lone goal in Notre Dame’s 1-0 win over Simon Kenton (Ohio).
Katherine Camper, Brunswick (Ohio), Sr., MF: Camper controlled the midfield and kept the team on an even keel, which help the team make a late rally and nearly pull off a late draw.
Maggie Carter, Indianapolis Cathedral (Ind.), Sr., MF: Carter delivered a strong performance as a holding midfielder.
Ellie Clifford, Zionsville (Ind.), Sr., D: Clifford converted a penalty kick to lift Zionsville to a 1-0 win over Sylvania Northview.
Maya Decker, Notre Dame Academy (Ky.), Jr., F: Decker scored both goals for the Pandas in a 3-2 loss to Walnut Hills.
Sofi Guven, Walnut Hills (Ohio), Jr., F: Guven scored the first goal that prompted a three-goal second half as Walnut Hills rallied for a win over Notre Dame Academy.
Mackenna Jordahl, St. Ursula Academy (Ohio), Sr., F: Jordahl’s goal lifted St. Ursula to a 1-0 win over Hamilton Southeastern.
Carson Kwiatkowski, Indianapolis Cathedral (Ind.), So., MF: Kwiatkowski jumpstarted Cathedral’s 2-1 win over nationally ranked Brunswick (Ohio) with an early goal.
Reni Osuntokun, Brebeuf Jesuit (Ind.), Sr., GK: Osuntokun was not put under much pressure, but that was often thanks to her ability to read the game. Several times, just when it appeared Mount Notre Dame (Ohio) had sprung a forward, Osuntokun raced off her line to collect the ball at the top of the box before it became a scoring chance for the opponents.
Hallie Pearson, Brebeuf Jesuit (Ind.), Sr., MF: Pearson, an Arizona commit, was the best player on the field and assisted both goals in the team’s 2-0 win. One assist was in the run of play, springing a teammate for an easy goal. Her other assist came from a set piece. Pearson covers a lot of ground, both side to side, and moving forward in the attack and able to recover for defensive plays.
Ariella Pitty, Brunswick (Ohio), Jr., MF/F: Pitty, an Ohio State commit, netted the goal for Brunswick in a 2-1 loss. She was constantly around the attack as Brunswick put Indianapolis Cathedral (Ind.) under a lot of pressure late in the match.
Jade Waters, Simon Kenton (Ky.), So., D: Waters had a strong showing and kept Toledo Notre Dame at bay all evening.
Lexi Watson, Mount Notre Dame (Ohio), So., D: MND went with a young lineup that acquitted itself quite well in a 2-0 setback to nationally ranked Brebeuf Jesuit. Watson was moved to center back and helped organize the back.
Skylin Yates, Simon Kenton (Ky.), Jr., GK: Yates made a couple of big saves and handled dangerous free kicks to keep the game close.
