ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- For McDonogh School (Md.), another big win came at a cost. For Sacred Heart Academy (Ky.), depth won the day.

Out-of-state teams dominated the storylines at the 2018 Lady Eagle Invitational only a year after watching Indiana teams sweep every group title in 2017.

McDonogh backed its lofty FAB 50 national ranking with a 4-2 win over Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) during Saturday's final round of play. But for the Eagles (2-0), they watched goalkeeper Abby VanMetre leave the field on a stretcher after she collided with the goal post while making a save. She was taken to a local hospital, but early post-match reports indicated VanMetre would be OK. One night earlier, McDonogh lost top scorer Baylee DeSmit to a knee injury.

Dani Peay netted the first two goals as McDonogh took command early. However, NDA's Lauren Carothers blasted a shot from distance to make the score 2-1. Kallista Wethern quickly put McDonogh back up by two goals with her second score on the weekend. But Lily Dorning responded for Notre Dame Academy, again making it a one-goal contest. Tennessee commit Lily McCarthy put the game away for McDonogh by converting a penalty kick. McDonogh's win gave the squad the Group A title, a group that featured last year's FAB 50 national champion Penn (Ind.), 2018 Indiana frontrunner Carmel (Ind.).

Sacred Heart, like McDonogh, replied on its depth to go 2-0 on the weekend, highlighted by the team's 2-1 come-from-behind result against fellow FAB 50-ranked Noblesville (Ind.) to win Group C. The result gave Sacred Heart two wins on a hot Saturday where the team's foru goals came from four players. Noblesville went ahead on a goal by Carly Hudnall. Allie George and Brielle Heuglin answered for Sacred Heart, which improved to 7-0 on the season.

"They've got drive and fight," Sacred Heart coach Libbey Smith said of the come-from-behind win where the team trailed 1-0 at halftime. "I was happy with our depth. Two games in one day, a hot day like today, we used everybody and needed everybody. I'm proud that we played everyone and still got the results."

One of the surprise teams this year was Pickerington North (Ohio), which used a 2-0 win over Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.) on Saturday to secure the Group B title and make a strong case for a FAB 50 ranking next week.

Assumption (Ky.) used a come-from-behind 2-2 tie with Indianapolis Cathedral (Ind.) to secure the Group D title. Assumption trailed 2-0 before Addi Cline and Corinna Soto scored goals. Host Zionsville (Ind.) jumped on Harrison (Ind.) early en route to a 3-1 victory to secure the Group E title, the only group title won by an Indiana school this year.

SATURDAY'S STANDOUTS

1. M/F Maya Lacognato, Penn (Ind.), Sr.: The IUPUI(w) commit scored both goals as Penn defeated Brebeuf Jesuit 2-0 on Saturday. Lacognato is the only holdover from Penn's three-year dynasty where the program went 66-1-4. That one loss was Lacognato's freshman year to Brebeuf in the state final. Penn exacted revenge over Brebeuf in the final the ensuing year before adding another state title last year, with Lacognato playing a key role during the season.

2. M Dani Peay, McDonogh School (Md.), Sr.: One of the smallest players on the field made a major iimpact for the second straight match. Peay scored McDonogh's first two goals to provide some breathing room in the team's 4-2 win over Notre Dame Academy (Ky.). She ended the weekend with three goals.

3. M Lauren Carothers, Notre Dame Academy (Ky.), So.: Carothers struck a blast from distance to put Notre Dame Academy back in the match with McDonogh School. Her quality was evident throughout the match, and she was one of the few players to score goals on both Friday and Saturday at the Lady Eagle Invitational.
