HS: NEPS, NTXES, Tampa Day 3 results
Brophy Prep (Ariz.) boys played themselves into the national title chase, Tampa Jesuit (Fla.) boys played their way into the FAB 50, and traditional girls powers Southlake Carroll (Texas) and Carondelet (Calif.) improved their national standing in a weekend full of national showcase events.
Below is a recap of the weekend three key events with national ranking consequences.
NORTH TEXAS ELITE SHOWCASE
A pair of Sams did in Sam Houston (Texas) at the North Texas Elite Showcase.
Sam Tolson and Sam Fletcher scored first-half goals and Brophy Prep (Ariz.) carried that to a 2-1 win over Sam Houston in NTXES title match.
The result moves Brophy Prep to 15-0-1 and puts this team squarely in the running for the FAB 50 national title this season. Brophy was ranked No. 1 two weeks ago, but a tie bounced the Broncos from the top spot, which was inherited by Sam Houston.
Brophy Prep now has back-to-back major title wins this season, capturing the AZ Showcase and NTXES top brackets.
Keeper Jair Garcia was named MVP for the event.
The third-place match pitted the co-hosts of the event -- Marcus (Texas) and Coppell (Texas) -- with a unique twist. Chase Drackett and Jack Coad scored the goals as Marcus, now coached by Chad Rakestraw, defeated Rakestraw's former team, Coppell, 2-0.
In the consolation final, Portland commit Tristan Weber served up three assists, giving him five for the tournament, as San Clemente (Calif.) defeated Juarez-Lincoln (Texas) 3-1. That outcome swung on 30-second span early in the second half. Juarez-Lincoln led 1-0 and was awarded a penalty kick that could have put the team ahead 2-0. Instead, San Clemente's Jake Carter made the save on the kick and Cameron Gadbury scored on the transition making it 1-1. From there, San Clemente added a pair of goals soon after for the final margin.
Jose Carranza, a junior, scored his fourth goal of the event Saturday as Grand Prairie (Texas) defeated Lake Travis (Texas) 1-0 in the seventh-place match. Carranza accounted for all of Grand Prairie's goals during the three-day event.
