HS: Southern Coast Cup, Day 2
FOLEY, Ala. -- About the only surprise during Day 2 action at the Southern Coast Cup was a truck catching fire in the parking lot.
Otherwise, it was business as usual for the favorites:
North Carolina signee Mary Elliott McCabe scored the lone goal as Charlotte Latin (N.C.) edged Westminster Schools (Ga.) in a match between girls programs that started the year in the FAB 50 Top 10. Although Westminster entered the week ranked higher, Thursday's results put Latin in the roll of favorite entering Friday's clash.
College of Charleston signee Charlie Marino delivered a second straight two-goal performance as boys FAB 50 No. 1 Wando (S.C.) rallied for a 3-1 win over FAB 50 No. 32 Christian Brothers (Tenn.) in a clash of nationally ranked teams.
Girls FAB 50 No. 23 Padua Academy (Del.) showed it might have been placed a bracket -- or two -- too low, after ripping Alabama's Class 6A defending champ Chelsea, 6-0. Padua, led by Florida Gulf Coast(w)-bound Ashlee Brentlinger, has an underclass-dominated lineup this year and is showing signs of being as strong as recent teams. Last year, Padua received a rude awakening playing in the top division, which prompted the move down. However, Padua leaves the event with a 2-0 record and 12-0 score differential. FAB 50 No. 25 Broken Arrow (Okla.) has played the same two opponents as Padua but only has a combined 5-0 scoring advantage.
Eureka (Mo.) and Rockwood Summit (Mo.), accounting for Missouri's strong girls showing at the event, both won Friday and head into Saturday's contests with chances to sweep division titles.
Also, Broken Arrow (Okla.), which hung for 60 minutes with Wando on Thursday, posted an impressive 4-1 win over Brookwood (Ga.) and Dobyns-Bennett (Tenn.) added to its undefeated run with a 3-0 victory over McGill-Toolen (Ala.) in Friday boys play. About the only match that was close to being called an upset was a scoreless draw between FAB 50-ranked Westminster Schools (Ga.) and Norman North (Okla.).
The following are the collective records by state vs. out-of-state opponents in the top three competitive brackets at the 78-team event: BOYS: South Carolina (2-0), Tennessee (5-1-2), Oklahoma (2-2-2), Georgia (1-3-2), Alabama (1-5); GIRLS: Delaware (2-0), North Carolina (1-0), Oklahoma (3-0-1), Missouri (3-0-1), Georgia (2-3), Alabama (0-8).
There are three varsity boys matches slated for Sunday, but by that time all of the bracket titles should be determined.
The scheduled action Saturday features Charlotte Latin vs. Eureka in a match that should decide the Wold Bay Division title, or top flight for girls. Wando will play for the Wolf Bay boys title against Brookwood, which has been eliminated from title contention. Broken Arrow plays earlier in the day and a tie or loss will make it a moot point, and Wando will win the title regardless of the outcome in its final match.
Friday night, as the final round of play was starting the second half, local fire engines were called to the scene in a parking lot where one vehicle had caught fire. Images were captured and shared on social media, including this one from Collierville's soccer team. The fire was quickly extinguished.
