HS: Spring state, region rankings, June 4
And then there was one.
With the crowning of boys soccer state champions in Iowa, only one boys soccer state remains active this spring -- Virginia.
While the top two FAB 50 spots are set, a Virginia team still could earn a No. 3 final ranking -- and the 6A field is pretty well stacked, featuring Oakton, South Lakes, James River, Cosby, Frank Cox and First Colonial highlighting the eight-team field. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday with the semifinals and final set for Friday and Saturday.
The big mover in boys soccer was [Robert E. Lee va-m] of Staunton, Va., which carries a 22-0 record into this week's state tournament following a convincing 3-0 win over previously undefeated George Mason. Mason was the team that knocked off eventual Tennessee state champ Greeneville at the Smoky Mountain Cup earlier in the season.
On the girls side, there was plenty to talk about -- much of it will be covered in Tuesday's FAB 50 recap.
Barrington (Ill.), last year's FAB 50 national champion, repeated as Illinois state champ to earn the No. 1 ranking in the state and region this week. Barrington defeated a trio of FAB 5o Top 10-ranked teams last week, capped with a sudden death shootout win over New Trier in the final, a result that denied New Trier a FAB 50 national title.
