HS: Spring, Winter SIMA FAB 50, March 8

For the next six weeks, this space will be shared with the winter teams winding down play and the spring teams heating it up.

This is the first of the weekly spring rankings, and already there is a change at the top of the SIMA FAB 50 boys rankings. A draw by former No. 1 Dalton (Dalton, Ga.) allows Norman North (Norman, Okla.) to move into the top spot. Interestingly, Norman North and Dalton are scheduled to square off at the Smoky Mountain Cup in Tennessee.

The winter boys and girls rankings largely held form as the California sectional playoffs drew to a close. This week, the Southern California Regional tournaments will mark the end of the high school season in California. After that, only Texas will remain in action.

WINTER RANKINGS

BIG MOVERS -- BOYS: Redlands East Valley (Redlands, Calif.). Redlands East Valley vaulted from No. 35 to No. 10 after knocking off Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.) in a shootout in a section title match. Despite the major accomplishment, Redlands East Valley declined a chance to play in this week's Southern California Regional tournament, where top teams from the Central, Los Angeles, San Diego and Southern section collide. GIRLS: Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.). Torrey Pines won the San Diego Open title in a loaded tournament field that included four teams in the SIMA FAB 50, including La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.). The tourney title helped Torrey Pines move from No. 14 to No. 4 this week. Next up is the Southern California Regionals, and a victory by Torrey Pines could put this perennial power in the running for SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 based on the number of quality results.

GIRLS: No. 26 Woodside (Calif.), No. 38 Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, Calif.), No. 43 Cinco Ranch (Katy, Texas), No. 49 Bishop Lynch (Dallas, Texas) and No. 50 [James Martin tx-w] (Arlington, Texas).

SPRING RANKINGS

BIG MOVERS -- BOYS: Oak Mountain (Birmingham, Ala.). Oak Mountain, with an 8-0-2 start, moves from No. 33 to No. 13 this week. Oak Mountain's strong state showing coupled with the state's out-of-state successes early this season helps justify the move for this perennial title challenger. GIRLS: Providence (Charlotte, N.C.). Powered by a 3-1 season-opening win over preseason state favorite Hough (Cornelius, N.C.), Providence moves from No. 22 to No. 13 this week.
