HS: State, region rankings, May 16
Dynasties and storybook endings were the theme of the week as the first of the 2016 spring high school state champions were crowned.
Tulsa Union (Tulsa, Okla.) wrapped up a second straight Oklahoma Class 6A girls state title with a 4-1 victory over Owasso (Okla.). The result extended Union's win streak to 36 matches and ran its three-year mark to 51-1.
Heritage Hall (Oklahoma City, Okla.) capped a perfect season with a 4-1 victory in the boys 5A final. Heritage Hall has won three state titles in the past four years and put together a 66-2 record during that stretch.
Meanwhile, the dean of South Carolina coaching couldn't have scripted a better storyline. Phil Savitz guided River Bluff (Lexington, S.C.) to the new school's first state title, a 5-0 thrashing of Clover (S.C.). The win marked the 700th victory for Savitz, and it was accomplished on the very field here he gained fame as head coach at Irmo (Columbia, S.C.).
