HS: State, region rankings, May 9

The number of Georgia boys teams chasing the SIMA FAB 50 national title got thinned out in a hurry last week.

Lakeside, Dalton, McIntosh and Greenbrier -- all ranked in the SIMA FAB 50 Top 10 and Nos. 2 through 6 in Georgia -- all lost in postseason play last week. Dalton's exit to Greenbrier ended that program's bid to win four straight state titles. While that outcome was not a major surprise, Greenbrier then lost to unranked Allatoona in the next round, which was perhaps the biggest upset of the week in Georgia.

It all adds up to a new-look for the Georgia state and region boys rankings this week.

Around the nation last week:

* Grandview (Aurora, Colo.) girls, ranked No. 1 in Colorado and in the West, made quite a statement last week by defeating two undefeated teams, which were ranked Nos. 2 and 3 in the state. The strong showing reinfoirces Grandview's standing and also make a case for moving up in the SIMA FAB 50 on Tuesday.

* River Bluff (Lexington, S.C.) boys avenged its only loss with a playoff win over former state No. 1 Wando (Mount Pleasant, S.C.). The victory sends River Bluff into this week's state semifinals.

* Maize (Kan.) girls, ranked No. 1 in the state, handled Olathe Northwest (Olathe, Kan.) 6-1 last week, a result that became even more impressive as Olathe Northwest had just tied Kansas No. 2 Shawnee Mission West (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) last week, as well.
