HS: State, Region rankings, Nov. 14
For St. Ignatius (Cleveland, Ohio) and Boulder (Colo.) boys soccer teams, state titles literally came down to the last kick.
Boulder capped a perfect season Saturday and finalized a first-ever SIMA FAB 50 Top 5 finish with a shootout victory over Broomfield (Colo.) that went 14 rounds with Boulder emerging 13-12.
On Sunday, St. Ignatius used a late goal to hold off St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio) 2-1 in the Ohio Division I finale, marking the first time a team has won three straight large school state titles in Ohio.
Here are a few other highlights from last week:
BOYS
There was no rest on Sunday for top teams in the East. Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, N.J.) edged Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, N.J.) 1-0 on a late goal in the Non-Public A state final, which finished about 30 minutes after St. Ignatius won its state title. Chaminade (Mineola, N.Y.) cruised to a 6-0 New York Catholic High School Athletic Association state final win over Canisius (Buffalo, N.Y.) earlier Sunday. In addition, Massachsuetts postseason play on Sunday nearly filled out this week's state semifinal brackets -- save the couple matches that will be held Monday. ... On Saturday, Chaminade (St. Louis, Mo.) added an eighth state title for the legendary program with a shootout win over Rockhurst Jesuit (Kansas City, Mo.). The teams started the school year ranked 1-2 in the state and after each team played more than 30 matches this season, ended up meeting in the final contest.
GIRLS
After dominating the Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, Pennsylvania teams took a big step backward after a slew of postseason surprise last week in the first two rounds of the state tournament. Canon-McMillan (Canonsburg, Pa.) moves to the top of the region rankings, but several teams from Maryland and Virginia moved into the Top 10. ... In New York, Arlington (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) surprised Massapequa (N.Y.) in the Class AA final Sunday, ending Massapequa's run of state titles. ... In Ohio, Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) added to its legacy with a state final win over Springboro (Ohio). ... In California, preseason favorite Montgomery (Santa Rosa, Calif.) delivered a section title despite not having some of the key players that were expected to play for the Vikings in the preseason.
