HS: State, Region rankings, Oct. 17
The 14 region No. 1 teams -- seven boys and seven girls -- combined to go 31-0-1 last week, yet that one tie did result in a change at the top.
Seattle Prep (Wash.) takes over the No. 1 spot in the Girls Northwest Region following a second tie this season between current region No. 2 Issaquah (Wash.), the former region No. 1, and No. 3 Skyline (Wash.).
The region No. 1s have gone 59-0-1 that past two weeks, but that trend will be challenged as several teams are either in or about to start postseason play, where the competition and stakes take a big step up.
Here are a few other highlights from last week:
BOYS
Louisville Collegiate (Ky.) defeated rival St. Xavier (Ky.) for the Distrcit 26 title, avenging the team's only defeat and justifying a significant jump in the Mid-East rankings.
Walter Johnson (Md.) and Walt Whitman (Md.) vaulted into the the Mid-Atlantic Top 10 after Whitman's stunning late win over St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.). Walter Johnson benefited from that result as this former SIMA FAB 50 team had defeated Whitman 4-0 earlier in the year.
GIRLS
Davis (Utah) is two wins away from completing a coast-to-coast run as state, region and SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 team. Davis, at 18-0, next plays in the state semifinals this week.
