HS: Weekend wrap, region rankings, April 1
Simply put, it was a surprise-filled weeked in high school soccer.
Westminster Schools (Atlanta, Ga.) boys won a tournament despite losing for the first time since 2017, Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) boys had their undefeated season end in the opening round of postseason play and two-time defending state champ Station Camp (Gallatin, Tenn.) boys lost a 6-0 match to a team that had only one win this season. Add to that, a pair of spring girls Top 10 teams were upset last week and it gives this week's state and regional rankings quite a make over in some areas.
Southlake Carroll had been the top-ranked Texas public school team for almost the entire season. Now, the Dragons, which didn't have a single win over a FAB 50 opponent, fall behind Hebron (Texas) in the state and regional rankings as the rest of the postseason plays out. Carroll's early exit is becoming some rather routine in the DFW where the area's regular season No. 1 has bowed out of the playoffs in the opening game three of the last four years.
Westminster and Station Camp competed in the second weekend of the Smoky Mountain Cup where everything played out as expected -- until Sunday. Station Camp defeated Westminster, ending Westminster's undefeated run at 43 matches (41-0-2) to take control of the top flight. Westminster bounced back to handle McCallie School (Chattanooga, Tenn.) to end the event at 2-1 on six points. Station Camp entered Sunday's match with McCallie needing only a win, but instead suffered the program's most lopsided defeat in more than a decade. For McCallie, the win continued a dominance of Station Camp as McCallie won last year's meeting 4-0. Westminster ended up as the group champ and McCallie earned second place over Station Camp on goal differential as both teams went 1-1-1.
