HS: Weekend Wrap, region rankings, May 6
The first state champions will be crowned this weekend.
And in the run-up to those events, all of the top seeded teams have survived.
Vestavia Hills (Ala.) girls team pulled out a 1-0 victory over rival Oak Mountain (Ala.) to advance to the Alabama 7A girls state semifinals. It was an unfortunate meeting in the quarterfinal round between the state's No. 1 and No. 2 teams this year. On the boys side, 6A Homewood (Ala.), 7A Hoover (Ala.) and 4A-5A Briarwood Christian (Ala.), respectively ranked Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in Alabama all reached the semifinals.
In Oklahoma, Jenks boys and girls -- both riding perfect records -- have advanced to the semifinals this week.
In South Carolina, No. 1 River Bluff (S.C.), No. 2 Wando (S.C.), No. 3 J.L. Mann (S.C.) and No. 5 Clover (S.C.) made it to the girls state semifinals in the large school bracket, bringing together teams with a combined 88-3-3 record. On the South Carolina boys side, [Dtuch Fork sc-m], Clover, Wando and J.L. Mann, the team's ranked Nos. 1-4, all made it to the state semifinals setting up an interesting set of matches. Like the girls, the boys semifinalists have put together a staggering showing this year -- a combined 87-6-1.
Around the nation this past week, St. Charles North (Ill.) saw its 58-match regular season undefeated streak come to a close. It is a result that moves St. Charles North back to No. 2 in Illinois, behind Barrington (Ill.). ... Broomfield (Colo.) returns to No. 1 in Coloroad after last week's top-ranked team took two losses. ... Brentwood (Tenn.) leaps to No. 1 after an 8-0 thrashing of a state-ranked opponents while last week's No. 1 tied an unranked team. ... Briar Woods (Va.) inherits the top spot in Virginia after Mills Godwin suffered its first defeat of the season.
