HS: Winter SIMA FAB 50, Jan. 12
BIG MOVERS -- BOYS: Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.). As the number of undefeated boys teams in California dwindles, Torrey Pines has stayed one step -- actually one goal -- above the competition. The team is 10-0-2 with seven of 10 wins coming by one goal or shootout. Despite the number of close calls, the undefeated record helps vault Torrey Pines from No. 47 to No. 20 this week. GIRLS: Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas). Last year, Coppell (Coppell, Texas) used an undefeated showing at the National Elite Prep Showcase to launch a SIMA FAB 50 national title-winning season. This year, Marcus makes the major jump -- from No. 26 to No. 2 -- afteer a 4-0 showing where it shut out all four opponents, including Coppell.
NEWCOMERS: BOYS: No. 6 Hebron (Carrollton, Texas), No. 12 Stony Point (Round Rock, Texas), No. 13 Palo Alto (Palo Alto, Calif.), No. 22 [Westwood tx-m] (Austin, Texas), No. 25 [Edison ca-m] (Huntington Beach, Calif.), No. 45 Grand Prairie (Grand Prairie, Texas), No. 46 [Jesuit College Prep tx-m] (Dallas, Texas), No. 47 Douglas (Parkland, Fla.), No. 48 Santa Rosa (Santa Rosa, Calif.), No. 49 Melbourne (Melbourne, Fla.) and No. 50 Corona del Mar (Newport Beach, Calif.). GIRLS: No. 13 Hebron (Carrollton, Texas), No. 25 Seven Lakes (Katy, Texas), No. 31 Bishop Moore (Orlando, Fla.), No. 41 [Edison ca-w] (Huntington Beach, Calif.), No. 42 The Woodlands (The Woodlands, Texas), No. 43 [Oxbridge Academy (West Palm Beach) fl-w] (West Palm Beach, Fla.), No. 44 Brandon (Brandon, Miss.), No. 49 Keller (Keller, Texas) and No. 50 Flower Mound (Flower Mound, Texas).
LOOKING AHEAD: BOYS: A national record and a national title could be settled by the end of the week. Florida power Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla) carries a 132-match undefeated streak into this week, where it is scheduled to play four contests. The team is one win/tie shy of equally the all-time record of 133 straight undefeated matches. If the Eagles can sweep all four games this week, it will defending its SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 ranking for the fourth straight year and fifth time in six seasons. GIRLS: The Florida playoffs start this week, but don't expect any upsets among the SIMA FAB 50-ranked teams. Usually the nationally ranked programs cruise through the district round, many winning by the state's eight-goal mercy rule.
