HS: Winter SIMA FAB 50 rankings, Jan. 20
When it comes to winter boys soccer, the battle is on for No. 2.
Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) extended its undefeated run to 117 matches while completing its first perfect season to go coast-to-coast as the SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 team for the 2014-15 season. While there's still three months of play remaining in the winter season, no team will dislodge the Eagles from the perch it has held for three straight years.
The current No. 2 is Rivera (Brownsville, Texas), which has put on two weeks of dominating performances in South Texas. The rest of the Top 10 is a collection of California and Texas programs.
Montverde's final week of action was highlighted by a fourth straight Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament title with wins over Alief Elsik (Houston, Texas), Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) -- which both entered with undefeated records -- and Coppell (Coppell, Texas). This year's MAST featured teams that won the highly competitive SoCal High School Classic and Arizona Showcase titles.
On the girls side, top-ranked Monte Vista (Danville, Calif.) received a scare before netting a second-half goal to edge league rival Carondelet (Concord, Calif.). There was a little bit of jostling among the girls Top 10 -- which is comprised completely of programs from California and Texas.
