HS: Winter state, region rankings, Dec. 7
It did not take long for the preseason favorites in California to fall.
Loyola (Los Angeles, Calif.) boys and La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.) girls lost matches in the first week of play, ending their brief stays at No. 1 in the state and region rankings. Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) boys and Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) move up into the No. 1 positions in both the state and California-South region rankings. In addition, Watsonville (Watsonville, Calif.) inherits the top spot in the California-North boys rankings after preseason No. 1 Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calif.) suffered a pair of shootout losses in a season-opening tournament.
The only other region that saw a change at the top occurred in the Southeast girls rankings where preseason favorite Ben Franklin (New Orleans, La.) lost to regionally ranked [Mt. Carmel la-w] (New Orleans, La.), leaving Madison Central (Madison, Miss.) to move into the No. 1 spot.
