HS: Winter state, region rankings, Jan. 7
All four Texas regions -- boys and girls, north and south -- have new No. 1 teams this week as the opening of the UIL season led to a massive reordering of the teams.
Interestingly, most of the new highly ranked Texas teams were already ranked, just the order changed following the weekend results.
Allen (Texas) and defending state champion Houston Memorial (Texas) take over the Texas North and South girls rankings, respectively, while Flower Mound (Texas) and Central Catholic (Texas) move into the Texas North and South boys positions.
Around the country this past week, California and Florida teams mostly were idle, resulting in little change in those power states.
In the West, however, Sunnyside (Ariz.) vaults to No. 1 over undefeated and previously No.1 Hawaii Prep (Hawaii) following a 5-1 thrashing of Brophy Prep (Ariz.) in the Arizona Showcase final. On the girls side, Perry (Ariz.) returns to No. 1 after the previous Hawaii top-ranked team lost to a league rival.
