Region, State HS Rankings: November 17
State champions for boys soccer were crowned over the weekend in Maryland, Missouri, New York, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, along with section championships in California, yet there were not many upsets among the elite teams.
River Hill (Md.) added its ninth state title since the school opened 18 years ago; Commack (N.Y.) swept a pair of weekend matches to keep the Class AA state title in Long Island; and Peters Township (Pa.) gave the school its fifth PIAA Class AAA soccer crown since 2007. Modest surprises occured in Missouri, as state-ranked Lee's Summit upended favorited Chaminade in penalty kicks, and North Carolina, were Ronald Reagan claimed its first crown with a victory over Broughton in a battle of regionally-ranked teams.
On the girls side, [West Springfield ma-g] (Mass.) and Arbor View (Nev.) made the biggest gains with lopised playoff wins last week. In fact, Arbor View won the Nevada large school state tournament with a 5-1 semifinal victory and a 6-0 championship match win.
In New York, long-time coach Dave Prutting capped his career with another Catholic state title at St. Anthony's, and Long Island rival Massapequa defended its Class AA state crown, wins that keep these powers 1-2 in the state and the region, and guaranteed a final Top 10 finish in the SIMA FAB 50.
