SIMA FAB 50: Calif. season draws to a close
Hold on!
It's not over yet.
A common mistake is to view the rankings following state championship week and think that's the end. Sure, the rankings relative to other teams in a state will stay the same, but the SIMA FAB 50 for the winter is far from finished. In fact, there's another month of play in Texas that will ultimately result in teams already finished likely moving higher in the upcoming weeks.
This past week, the California winter season drew to a close with Montgomery and Cathedral boys and Upland and Carondelet girls claiming the division titles. Interestingly, three of the four didn't even win their sectional title and only reached the regional tournament as wild cards. Montgomery was the only team to sweep the section and region titles. All four teams, however, move up in this week's SIMA FAB 50 rankings.
As for spring soccer, there was not a single move in the girls Top 25 and very little movement in the boys rankings as several states have yet to play.
Now, on with the rankings ...
BIG MOVERS: BOYS: Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.). While Cathedral's four-spot move from No. 16 to No. 12 wasn't the largest jump this week, it does put this powerhouse in position to make a run at a SIMA FAB 50 Top 10 finish. ... GIRLS: Carondelet (Concord, Calif.). After losing in the section semifinals, the Cougars took advantage of an at-large seed in the NorCal regional playoffs and swept all three games to finish at the region champ. The results move Carondelet from No. 33 to No. 16 this week.
NEWCOMERS: BOYS: No. 45 Palos Verdes (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), No. 46 Godinez (Santa Ana, Calif.), No. 48 Lake Travis (Austin, Texas), No. 49 Belton (Belton, Texas) and No. 50 Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.). ... GIRLS: No. 12 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), No. 48 Lebanon Trail (Frisco, Texas) and No. 50 Oxnard (Calif.).
