The Allstate All-America Cup features two 20-player rosters for each the boys and girls teams. Players were selected from the Allstate All-America list, which was compiled during the 2018-19 school year. The 80 players selected for the contest cover the fall, winter and spring seasons, and in most cases includes the top high school-playing prospects in the Class of 2020. It should be noted, due to certain state association rules, players from some states were prohibited from competing.
Still, the two contests Wednesday will be loaded with talent.
All 80 players selected for the game were at least honors as TopDrawerSoccer State Stars for the past school year. Of the 80, 13 girls and nine boys were part of the TopDrawerSoccer All-America teams and an additional 13 girls and 10 boys were part of the TopDrawerSoccer All-Region teams.
TopDrawerSoccer will provide post-match evaluation of the top performers.
JSerra (Calif.) leads all schools with six players in the competition -- five from the school's FAB 50 Winter No. 1-ranked girls program and one male player. The five JSerra girls were split among the two teams, which are being coached by Brandi Chastian and Julie Foudy. Some of the key players to watch include JSerra keeper Ryan Campbell and midfielder Rachel Bastone, Tabor Academy (Mass.) forward Catherine Berry and Wesleyan School (Ga.), all of whom received TopDrawerSoccer All-America first-team honors this past school year.
On the boys side, St. Ignatius (Ohio) leads the way with three players in the contest. Texas standout Jose Ortiz of Sam Houston and Jenks (Okla.) forward Will Edwards are the lone TopDrawerSoccer All-America first-team picks in the contest. Texas forward Jose Gallegos was projected to play in the event, but at the last minute had to withdraw since he had an obligation to USL team San Antonio FC.
While the game honors last year's junior standouts, it also serves as a kickoff to the 2019-2020 high school soccer season. In fact, Savina Zamborini of DuPont Manual (Ky.) is part of a state where fall practice already has started. By the end of the week, all of the Ohio players in this competition will be practicing for their high school teams, as well.
Following the Allstate Cup that players will be introduced later that evening during the MLS All-Star Game.
