Cal Poly camp in beautiful San Luis Obispo

Attending a Cal Poly soccer camp is a day at the beach – in a literal sense, not a figurative one.

Part of the charm and appeal of a young soccer player learning from coach Paul Holocher and his staff has to do with the surroundings. The Cal Poly campus in San Luis Obispo is a picturesque location where the ocean and sunshine meet and the weather is more than inviting.

And then there’s the soccer.

Holocher has built a great foundation with the Mustangs, who finished second in the Big West conference last season, and he’s doing the same when it comes to aspiring players in the summer time.

“Our summer camps are truly spectacular. The camaraderie is great, the weather is always amazing and a player gets the chance to learn from some top level college coaches,” Holocher said.

The Cal Poly Boys camps offer two summer options: A College Prep Advanced camp, which has two sessions, one June 23-27 and another July 14-18. These are designed for the serious high school footballer moving towards playing at the college level.

Then there’s the Senior and Junior Elite Camp held July 21-25. These sessions are made to provide an atmosphere for players of different age groups (9-13 and 14-18) and skill levels.

A staple of all the camps is personal attention and specialization. Players are broken up by class and are assigned one college coach per group. Coaches from the likes of UC San Diego, Cal State Dominguez, Stanford, Harvard and Valparaiso are present to provide a unique voice and diverse direction.

The technical sessions are balanced with 11v11 games, fun tournaments and All-Star games based on camp performances.

Off the field, leisure time can be spent on the campus’ state of the art recreational facilities, at the pool or on the gorgeous beaches.

“These are some of the most enjoyable weeks of the year for everyone,” Holocher said. We have three brand new all weather fields and all natural surfaces; great speakers during the week that talk about recruiting and important issues. It’s an ideal event.”
