Texas A&M reveals winning secrets at camps
April 22, 2010
Texas A&M(w) women’s head coach G Guerrieri has built an esteemed program based on a few basic tenets.

The most successful team in the Big 12, the Aggies have 15 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances not to mention 10 Big 12 titles in their 17 years of existence.

So what’s the key to the program’s sustained success?

Well, you can find your clues during one of the many Texas A&M summer camps offered to both boys and girls of all ages.

“We think it’s important to learn how to play with other people,” Guerrieri said, speaking to the focus of the camps. “Working on 1v1 is nice, but a player who knows what they’re doing can always beat the defense playing 2v1. We believe in making kids comfortable with the ball and play at the highest speed possible, but we work on it in terms of combinations and a team concept.”

This ideology comes straight from the Texas A&M philosophy, and the sessions operated throughout the camp are extracted directly from what the Aggies do. So to truly understand the winning formula architected by Guerrieri and his coaching staff you have to come be a part of it.

Texas A&M offers several opportunities with a variety of residential camps that provide players of all skill levels with the optimum chance to experience soccer instruction at its best.

Beginning June 6-9, the Aggies launch their residential camp season which starts with a boys and girls gathering for ages 11-18. Through June until July 18, Texas A&M offers several other options, including a girl’s only meeting July 10-14 along with events designed for players from 5-10 years of age.

While the boys and girls are separated into their own sessions and reside at different locations, the dual occupancy allows for the exceptional coaching staff to be accessed by both groups.

And speaking of the on-field presenters, the Texas A&M gatherings will feature a unique cast of highly regarded soccer aficionados. In addition to the bevy of Division I, II and III coaches, soccer minds from the Manchester United Academy and Irish youth national team will also be on hand for this rare extravaganza.

The Aggies will also be personally represented not only with their coaches, but with the entire team, which lends its services and insights to the campers.

This comprehensive week of soccer instruction and college experience ends with each participant receiving a written evaluation that helps them identify areas in which to build upon for the future.

It’s been 17 years since Guerrieri first took over the reigns at Texas A&M, and as it turns out his model of success has extended from the soccer season to his summer program.

The two go hand in hand.

“I think when players come to our camp they are able to get a feeling for why we’ve become a dominant program,” Guerrieri said. “They get to live in the same dorm rooms as the players and get the same emphasis on playing at the highest level.”
