Xavier camp develops person, player
The Xavier men’s soccer program knows a lot about creating a winning culture.
In just a year’s time, the Musketeers have gone from a two-win team to an Atlantic 10 Champion that reached its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
Second-year head coach Andy Fleming, the man who sparked the change upon his arrival, is sharing his program’s recipe for success at the College Soccer “101” Elite camp, an event that will impart invaluable wisdom on July 14-17.
This four-day gathering will look to introduce the everyday demands of college soccer, while simulating a collegiate training camp. Campers will be exposed to the off-the-field and mental demands of the game, albeit while bring trained and evaluated by some of the nation’s top Division I and III coaches.
The camp is for high school students of all grades, but is specifically beneficial to rising juniors and seniors. Campers will be have numbered jerseys in alignment with an in depth player profile book for attending college coaches. The daily calendar includes two training sessions, along with two matches. Topics will range from technical and tactical, to fitness, strength and agility training. Our aim is to enhance the campers soccer IQ and their feel for making decisions and meeting the demands of the game.
In addition, the camp will feature daily forums discussing the social, academic and personal demands of being a student athlete. Time management, goal setting, and creating a personal “brand” based on the “ideal you,” will be emphasized.
As a new feature, EXACT Sports ™ has partnered with AFSC to provide each camper an individual report based on the mental drills and workshops that campers partake in. This report will highlight aspects of self esteem, situation management, mental toughness, confidence and decision making. Detailed player evaluations are great references for college coaches and will be issued as well.
According to Fleming, the camp will mirror both Xavier as a university and its men’s soccer program.
“We don’t claim to have the best anything, or the biggest or newest of anything,” he said. “We focus on the experience of our players, human development and how much they learn and grow. Our campus is smaller in size, and fosters relationships and comfort for its students. This camp is no different. We want to expose campers to the academic, athletic and social demands of college, yet connect with them and have a manageable and personable camp. That’s what makes Xavier great, and is what makes this camp unique. This isn’t just a soccer camp, but a growing up camp.”
