Pipeline SC Black U17 (MD) 2-1 (PKs) Baltimore Celtic SC U17 (MD)
In the U17 Showcase Black division, everything came down to one last kick. Fortunately for Pipeline, the game was on its player’s foot – and Mario Carneiro buried the last penalty kick to the bottom left corner, securing first place for his team in a Maryland showdown.
“The second half we struggled a little bit. We fought to get through the half, and then I felt like in the overtime we started to push the game and the belief was back,” Pipeline head coach Santino Quaranta said. “I told them a story about the 2005 Gold Cup that I played in [with D.C. United] and we went to penalty kicks, and it’s about a mentality. It’s a confidence and a belief that you have to have.”
The game was primarily controlled by Pipeline, getting the first two quality scoring chances and the first goal, but Baltimore battled back in the second half and made it a game.
Pipeline’s Carneiro put his team on the board first when he knocked a right-footer out of the air on a set piece. The play was set up by Thomas Walker, who made a nice one-touch pass to Mitchell Love. Love corralled the ball into the box, cut back to the outside and fed Carneiro for the finish in the 56th minute.
From there, Celtic’s Dominic Duncan turned on his jets to continually get in behind the defense and walk around in the midfield. His talent came to fruition in the 73rd minute. After Pipeline’s goalkeeper, Elton Schwartz, stoned him all game, Duncan was finally able to break down the defenders and put one past the keeper to the bottom left side of the net.
It was a game of cat and mouse for the remainder of regulation and 10 minutes of overtime, each team managing to string together passes but not get past the other team’s defensemen.
Pipeline put together a strong showing in PKs and took down Baltimore 4-1 in penalties. Pipeline’s Jake Dengler, Nicholas Battalglia, Christoper Carroll and Carneiro each converted on their chance while Duncan was the only one able to do the same for Celtic.
United FA 01 Premier U15 (GA) 3-2 Ohio Premier Green U15 (OH)
United controlled much of the match in route to a first-place finish in the U15 Showcase Black division, but it let Ohio creep dangerously close to sending the game into extra time and taking the gold.
“It’s been a really hard few weeks for us, we played actually 15 games in two weeks,” United head coach Velko Iotov said. “It feels extremely well. I’m really proud of the boys.”
Striking with two goals in 45 seconds, United looked to have the game sealed by the 21st minute. Trey Hine, the team’s captain, had a red-hot foot and tallied both of the markers. He drew first blood when he received a set piece in the right side of the box and put home a right footer. His second goal came by the same form, except that one was with the left foot.
Ohio got on the board in the 29th minute when a corner kick was mishandled on the clear by United and Connor Des Roches swooped in to knock in the loose ball.
United extended its lead to 3-1 in the 49th minute when Davis Eddleman placed a perfect corner kick on the feet of Mario Ventura, who made no mistake with the ball and sent it into the back of the net with a left foot.
But Ohio battled back after receiving a free kick just outside the left side of the box. On the ensuing free kick in the 52nd minute, Drew Fischer bent a ball into the top right corner of the net on a perfectly placed touch.
Unfortunately for Ohio, its luck ended there and United went on to control the remainder of the match on its way to a championship win.
Match Fit Academy FC Black U17 (NJ) 2-1 FC Golden State East U17 (CA)
The U17 Showcase Gray Division championship game was a sight to see, but Match Fit held off Golden State just enough to secure a 2-1 win and earn first place in the division.
“We regenerated well over the last few days and obviously a tough tournament, but the boys dug in today and they thoroughly deserved it,” Match Fit head coach Pete Kay said.
The first half was all Golden State, getting two solid chances before Match Fit gained a 2-0 advantage. Match Fit struck first in the 53rd minute when Spencer Patton converted on an attempt just seconds after Mile Franklyn’s chance was cleared off the goal line.
Vincenzo Pugliese gave his team a two-goal lead in the 74th minute when he struck a right-footed shot into the back of the net and looked to secure a victory for his team.
But Golden State’s Salvador Morando had another plan. He gave his team a glimmer of hope in the 80th minute when he beat everybody and put a right footer past the keeper.
Long ball after long ball and a failure to string together passes was ultimately Golden State’s demise in the final 10 minutes of the game, though.
