ORLANDO- The Disney Girls Soccer Showcase returned for the final games Sunday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Players entered focused on the task at hand, with championships on the line. Here are few of the matchups TopDrawerSoccer.com covered on the cold, rainy day.

It was to no surprise to New York SC 97 that they were in the championship game, as they won a title in Orlando a year ago. New York came in looking to wrap up its quest for back-to-back championships was realized, as Samantha Coffey's penalty kick in the 86th minute secured a 3-2 victory for New York SC Sunday morning.

 

"It was definitely a critical moment for our team," Coffey said of the penalty kick situation. "I like penalty kicks. I like the pressure that comes with them. It makes me play better. It elevates my play. I like tight games like these because I personally think they're so much fun."

 

New York couldn't help themselves from being on the Florida Fire's end of the field most of the morning, as they accumulated 16 shots on goal. The first goal of the game in the 23rd minute when Florida Fire's Taylor Hatch scored and teammate Jessica Monteiro helped out on the assist.

 

New York, though, would tie up the game before halftime when Marguerite Basta even up the contest with goal in the 36th minute. The second half had a feel of a back and forth affair, in which the game seemed destined to head into overtime. Coffey scored what looked to be the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute, but Florida's Karen Rogge notched the game up at 2-all. Basta earned New York the go-ahead penalty kick goal, when she was fouled in the penalty box, in which Coffey slid the winning score past goalkeeper Casey Winn.

 

"We won this tournament last year too, so this is a huge, huge win for us," Coffey said. "It couldn't have happened in a better fashion."

 

 

One thing was certain for Fredricksburg FC 98 Gold's Myra Konte: Her team wasn't headed back to Virginia without the championship in hand.

Konte personally made sure her team made the 11-hour trip back with handware, as the forward scored two key goals in Fredricksburg's 3-1 victory over FCKC Forte Elite in the U17 championship.

 

"It was really my team that helped me get those goals," Konte said. "I was just thinking we need this win and I turned and shot. We haven't lost as a team in over a year, so this game was really big for us. Last year we didn't do too good at Dsiney, so I'm just really proud of the team."

FCKC Forte Elite took the lead in the first half in the 22nd minute, when Chais Wright knocked in a goal off a corner kick. Shutout in the first half, Fredricksburg coach Jens Baeumer talked to his team and halftime and reminded his squad that they were much better then the showing being put on. He was right.

 

Baeumer's team scored to the tune of three goals in the second half, two coming from Konte. Fredricksburg outshot FCKC 11 shots to 5 and were able take advantage of the opportunities.  

 

Many teams came into Sunday's championship games with experience from being in the same position just a year ago. Kings Hammer Academy KHA Red was one of those squads with championship expertise from being in the Disney Showcase last winter.

 

Same tournament, similar results as Kings Hammer Academy received two goals from outstanding forward Makenna Jordahl in a 2-0 victory over Midwest United FC 00 Royal.

 

"I scored the game-winning goal last year in the championship, so I thought I owed it to my team to score some goals again this time around," Jordahl said. "It was just real important to us to win it all again. It's really cool to go back to back. Our hope is to get into a national league next season and do it all over again."

 

Kings Hammer Academy KHA Red scored a goal in each half, courtesy of Jordahl in the 3rd and 57 minutes, respectively. Midwest United just could not muster up many opportunities throughout the contest whatsoever, amounting under five shots on goal for the contest.

 

Sting Austin took an early 1-0 lead, but relinquished their advantage and then earned it back, as they scored the go-ahead goal in the second half and narrowly got by SJA FC Crew 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

 

Midfield play proved to be vital, as both teams battled for possession and scoring opportunities were hard to come by. Sting Austin took the early lead under 10 minutes in, as Alison Navarro scored the contest's opening goal. They were able to hold onto the lead until midway through the first half, until Jenna Adcock scored the equalizer and sent the game into intermission tied at one apiece.

 

Of Sting Austin's six shots on goal, two went in and Olivia Bonner scored the latter on an assist from teammate Amber Posthauer.
