2015 Disney Qualifier: Day 2 Recaps
ORLANDO- The second day of the Disney Qualifier soccer showcase at the ESPN Wide World of Sports started off with cool weather and the day was filled with competitive games down the stretch and some beautiful Florida sunshine. Here are some of the key matchups from Sunday's action.
Tampa Bay United Premier U15 (FL) 2-1 OCYS 00/01 Purple U15 (FL)
Tampa Bay United got its scoring opportunity early in the first half, as attacking midfielder Landry Singleton headed a shot that bounced off the top crossbar but fellow teammate Alexa Guido rebounded the shot for a goal in the 7th minute.
Exactly seven minutes later, Singleton would capitalize on another scoring chance, as she blasted a shot past Orlando City goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin (three saves) to give Tampa Bay a commanding 2-0 lead. Orlando City had its scoring chances throughout the opening half, but just couldn't find the back of the net.
Orlando City finally got on the board in the second half, as forward Christian Scott got behind the Tampa Bay defense and notched a goal. Scott had an energy burst in the latter half and showcased her speed and attacking abilities.
Tampa Bay stood tall in the second half defensively and kept Orlando City from mounting any real equalizing goal threats. Both teams had eight shots on goal and a corner kick each.
Florida Elite 99/00 U16 (FL) 1-0 Annandale United FC 99 U16 (VA)
In a game played at likely the hottest part of the day, both teams played at a high intensity in an evenly matched contest Saturday afternoon.
Scoring opportunities were very few and far between, as both teams could not sustain good possessions and gain good control on touches. Florida Elite's Kaelen Glaze did have a good early scoring chance in the 3rd minute, but his shot sailed just over the top crossbar.
Florida Elite had two players exit the game in the first half due to bleeding, including goalkeeper Jacob Grubbs, who sustained a cut to the forehead but would return just before halftime. Also defender Vasil Cikopana went out with a similar cut to the forehead as Grubbs.
Florida Elite broke through in the 42nd minute on a own goal that came off a free kick by midfielder Ryan Cadwalader. After taking the 1-0 lead, Florida Elite relied upon its defense and Grubbs to keep Annandale at bay. Florida Elite tool right shots on goal in comparison to Annandale's five.
Cape Coral SA 98/99 Cyclone Girls Black U17 (FL) 2-0 Port St. John United 98/99 U17 (FL)
With the weather starting to cool down and drops of rain coming down, both teams played through light humidity and the game started 12 minutes earlier than its original start time.
Cape Coral SA 98/99 Cyclone Girls Black took the lead in the first half on a goal from Victoria Mayo. After the initial score, Cape Coral couldn't build any momentum off that and stayed stagnant the rest of the first half. Port St. John's scoring opportunities were rare, as they spent most of the game on their own defensive end.
Mayo opened up the second half with another scoring opportunity, but wasn't able to convert. Despite missed chances, Cape Coral put the game out of reach in the 47th minute when forward Claudia Lopez scored to put her team up 2-0. Cape Coral played solid defensively and held onto the shutout win.
Cape Coral had eight shots on goal in the second half compared to Port St. John's zero shots on net. The game would finish before inclement weather dominated the Kissimmee area during the evening hours.
