2015 Disney Qualifier: Humid Day 1
ORLANDO- The first day of the Disney Qualifier soccer showcase at the ESPN Wide World of Sports started off with some humid weather, but the day ended with competitive games down the stretch and some beautiful Florida sunshine. Here are some of the key matchups from Saturday's action.
Florida Fire Jrs 98-99 U17 (FL) 5-0 (score), United FA 99 Premier U17 (GA)
From start to finish, Florida Fire Jrs 98-99 club controlled their match with ease against Georgia's United FA 99 Premier behind a good performance from forward Jack Gilliam, who scored two first half goals.
Florida Fire midfielder Chris Palivas had the first opportunity to open up the scoring, when he took a good crossing pass and sailed his shot over the top right crossbar. Not too long later, Weston Maki took a shot from 20 yards out but only to be denied.
Gilliam got the scoring going in the 12th minute blasting a goal past United goalkeeper Avery Dekshenieks. Two minutes later Gilliams added a second goal to his totals on a tap in. Florida Fire carried a 4-0 lead heading into halftime and never looked back.
Dekshenieks despite having over 15 shots fired at goal, was able to make nine saves and keep the Florida Fire out of the net for most of the second half. Florida Fire goalkeeper Martin Bailey made two saves in 50 minutes of play. The Fire ended the math with 24 shots on goal and seven corner kicks.
BSA 0001 Select Black U15 (FL) 1-1 Treasure Coast United MSA U15 (FL)
With the winds picking up from the north because of the possibility of rain, both teams played to sustain possessions in an even match between BSA 0001 Select Black and Treasure Coast United MSA Saturday afternoon.
Treasure Coast United's opened up the scoring in the first half, when forward Lizzy Spears broke away and punched in the game's 1st goal. Moments later, BSA 0001 Select Black's Kiki Duron notched the equalizer before the game went into a delay because of inclement weather in the nearby area.
Brevard Soccer Alliance turned up the pressure in the second half after the weather delay, as they had several scoring opportunities in the latter half of play.
OCYS 97/98 Purple U18 (FL) 2-0 Ponte Vedra Storm Gold U18 (FL)
In what anticipated to be one of the most competitive matches in the U18 bracket, the game didn't disappoint. With college prospects all over the field, high intensity and physical play dominated the throughout the contest.
The first half featured Orlando City 97/98 Purple having multiple chances to score the game's opening goal, with seven shots on goal taken and four corner kicks. Ponte Vedra'a goalkeeper Aaron Zellmer (7 saves) was hit with a yellow card in the 10th minute and Ponte Vedra had to absorb another yellow later in the half.
Orlando City after a plethora of opportunities in the first half finally broke through in the 46th minute when Henri Hellu scored off a mishandle by Zellmer after he made a save. Holding a 1-0 lead and controlling the midfield for most of the game, Orlando City stayed on the attack and kept the pressure on Ponte Vedra.
Ponte Vedra just could not find the back of the net all evening and the dagger came when Sebastian Vaval scored in the 60th minute, which sealed the game. Orlando outshot Ponte Vedra 14-2 on shots on goal.
Bay United SC 99 Sharks Blue U16 (SC) 1-1 Tampa Bay United Premier 99 U16 (FL)
Even with an earlier weather delay, the Bay United-Tampa Bay United game was still able to start on time and the South Carolina team wasted no time going out in front.
Bay United took the early lead six minutes in when forward Peyton Pefferes scored to give her team the 1-0 advantage. Tampa Bay United searched for the equalizer vigorously, as they went on attack mode for the rest of the first half.
Tampa Bay United eventually found the tying goal in the 39th minute when Sarah Sbar got by Bay United goalkeeper Victoria Routt for the score. Routt was on her heels for the entire second half, as Tampa Bay continued to attack and nab the go ahead goal.
