Another U.S. U18 boys’ national camp has come and gone, Mike Matkovich’s group wrapping up their week-long gathering Sunday at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
The camp finished up with a brief scrimmage day consisting of a round-robin with three sides playing 20-minute halves against one another.
A U18 player from Sunday's scrimmage.
Team One was led by Wake Forest coach Jay Vidovich and featured the following lineup:GK: Andrew Wolverton
D: Christopher Davis, Bryan Gallego, Sean Cunningham, Scott Thomsen
M: Daniel Metzger, Sean Davis, Daniel Garcia
F: Jose Rivera, Sean Okoli, Samuel Adjei
Team Two coach Ken Lolla (Louisville) worked with:
GK: Ryan Herman
D: David Caban, Aaron Simmons, Michael Ambrose, George Fradenburg
M: DeAndre Yedlin, Seth Casiple, Luis Gil, Amadou Dia, Brandon Allen
F: Zachary Batteer
And finally, Team Three was lead by Hugo Perez and featured:
GK: Jonathan Kempin
D: Jordan McCrary, Boyd Okwuonu, Kristian Garciamendez, Pablo Ocegueda
M: Miguel Lopez, Samuel Coleman, Will Trapp, Markhus Lacroix
F: Villyan Bijev, Jonathan Top
Sub: Ryan Zinkhan
Just three total goals were scored during the blitz but there were standout performances in the limited action.
On Team Two, forward Zachary Batteer was aggressive and used his height and athleticism to his advantage. He got behind the defense on a late sequence and beat goalie Andrew Wolverton for a score.
Centerback Michael Ambrose is always a lot to deal with. The left-footed player has a great combination of skills even though he wasn’t challenged all that often. Nor was teammate George Fradenburg, who played left back, but he showed a lot of natural skill and work ethic.
The Team One backline featured the combination of Sean Cunningham, Scott Thomsen and Bryan Gallego. Gallego is a natural leader who shines at these gatherings.
Forwards Samuel Adjei and Sean Okoli bring a lot of dangerous ability to the field. They have been paired together in previous camps and seem to have somewhat of a feel for one another.
On Team Three, Will Trapp stood out for his exceptional ball skills. He’s got quick feet and a good soccer brain.
He’s always a joy to watch amongst other top flight players.
