Championship Matches set at USYS Nats

OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS – The heat rolled in here at the U.S. Youth Soccer Nationals big time, slowing down play as teams faced their third match in three days.
But for many, the day’s events determined whether they would have the chance to play for all the marbles this weekend or instead would head home on Almost But Not Quite Airlines.
Following is a breakdown of how each age group played out, including full results and championship matches pairings for Saturday (U14 & U15) and Sunday (U16 through U19).
U14 Boys
Washington team Crossfire Premier was already in the final, but Chicago-area side Eclipse Select needed to do some work to make sure of it, and they did this with a 3-1 win. Lloyd Chatfield, Luca Giovine and Carlos Schulz scored for Eclipse, after Matthew Popalawski had opened for Crossfire.
Lonestar’s Harrison Heath and Andrew Lopez scored 2 goals a minute apart in the 2nd half to lift Lonestar to a 2-0 win over Lehigh Valley.

U14 Girls
MVLA Lightning turned in a very impressive performance to beat SAC United 4-0. Celeste Kaashoek scored twice, with Caitlyn Wong and Hannah Reed adding single tallies.
Kendall Juhnke scored a last-minute winner Michigan Hawks in a 1-0 win over Dallas Sting., but Sting was already set to play in the final.

U15 Boys
Baltimore Bays were already in the final so a 2-0 loss to Albion didn’t hurt them. Ariel Lassiter and Oscar Ortega scored for the Californians, who played their way into a championship rematch with Bays. Lemont Raiders could have reached the final but were tripped up by Mt. Hamilton Tigres, who got goals from Cesar Garcia and Sergio Rico in a 2-0 win. Vardar got goals from Will Clark, Tyler Jugon and Luke Ridenour in a 3-1 win over Concorde Fire, with Francisco Miranda scoring for the Georgians.

U15 Girls
With their places in the championship match already guaranteed, Boston-area side Scorpions and Dallas Sting weren’t giving anything away in their match Friday, playing to a lackluster scoreless draw in the heat. Jasmine Hart scored a 2nd half winner for Dallas Texans in a 1-0 win over Real Colorado, with Ashton Hierholzer recording the shutout in goal. Frances Crouse scored a winner for Beadling in a 1-0 win over JB Marine.

U16 Boys
Waza FC knocked fellow Michigan side Grand Rapids Crew out of the final with a 2-1 win Friday, but were bested on a head-to-head tiebreaker themselves by Southern California side Slammers. Cameron Roberts and Erik Kelly scored for Waza, with Diego Bobadilla tallying for Crew. Lakota Thomas scored to lift RSL Florida over Slammers 1-0, while Blast FC defeated PSC Coppa 3-0, Jeremy Fernandes, Trevor Pitroff and an own goal accounting for the scoreline.

U16 Girls
Solar SC remained perfect in group play with a 3-0 win over Region III rivals NASA Elite. Taylor Smith scored twice for Adrian Solca’s Dallas-area side, with Hailee Hunn completing the scoring. Solar will play Northern Virginia side McLean Strikers, who reached the title game by virtue of a 1-0 win over Minnesota Thunder, with Sharon Wojcik’s 2nd half winner punching their ticket. Naperville Fury kept Colorado Rush out of the final with a 3-1 win. Christina Ordonez, Zoe Swift and Corinne Harris scored for the Illinois side, while Lindsey Horan scored for Rush.

U17 Boys
St. Louis Scott Gallagher played their way into the final with a 2-0 win over Penn Fusion. Shane Mihaljevic and Dylan Hundelt scored for Gallagher, who moved past GSA Phoenix in the standings, with GSA being held to a 1-1 draw by in-state rivals Alpharetta Ambush, who clinched the other spot in the final with the result. Adnan Junuzovic scored in the opening minute for GSA, but Karl Chester equalized for Ambush, who got a great performance in goal from Kevin Quintana. Juan Gutierrez scored twice and Alfredo Ramirez once as West Coast FC defeated Hicksville Strikers 3-0.

So Cal Blues maintained their perfect record with a 2-1 win over D’Feeters, Lauren Bohaboy and Haley Rosen scoring for Randy Dodge’s team. Jacquelin Strug scored for D’Feeters. Blues will be joined in the final by Syosset Sting, which lost 2-1 to Slammers. Courtney Proctor and Morgan Valenzuela scored for Slammers, with Gabrielle Charno tallying for the New York side. Real So Cal defeated Michigan Hawks 4-1, getting goals from Kathryn Speidel, Mary Mazurek, Alyson Birgel and Bridget Berman. Genevieve Shaba scored for Hawks.

A nightmare scenario for talented Philadelphia-area side YMS Xplosion, as a 3-0 loss to East Side United means they lose out on a 3-way tiebreaker East Side and Shattuck St. Marys. Steven Evans, Steven Hughes and Tyler Pummel scored for the Oregonians. Shattuck defeated Triangle United 4-0 behind goals from Edison Crespo Perez (2), Adam Glanzer and Michael Gandier.

U18 Girls
In a meaningless preliminary to the title game, Haley Haagsma scored the winner for Southern Californians Laguna Hills Eclipse in a 1-0 win over defending national champion Eclipse Select. The two teams play for real on Sunday. Holly Tomlinson scored twice and Carly Shultis once as AFC Lightning defeated McLean Dragons, who got a goal from Allison Yeager, 3-1.

U19 Boys
FC DELCO Hammerheads and Columbus Crew played to a 1-1 draw to set up an immediate rematch in Sunday’s final. Daniel DiLullo scored for the Philadelphia-area side, with Tyler Pollock equalizing for Crew. Portland-area club Westside Metros won the other game, 4-1 over Andromeda Navy. Timothy Kagey and Quinton Beasley each scored once for Westside, while Erik Hurtado tallied twice. Jake Lanier scored for Andromeda.

U19 Girls
Vanessa Ibuweike scored a 1st half winner for Lonestar, placing them in the final with a 1-0 win over FC Bucks. The Austin-area club will play Chicago side Eclipse Select, which drew 2-2 with Alameda County Northstars. Mary Kubiuk and Nicole Lipp scored for Eclipse, while Micaela Castain scored twice for the Northern California side.
