Day 1 coverage from San Antonio ECNL event
San Antonio - The fourth event of the ECNL kicked off Friday at the STAR Soccer Complex.
A total of 110 U-15 through U-18 girls teams will compete through Sunday. Each team will play one match per day.
An upset took place in the U-15 category as the Charlotte Soccer Academy held on to edge Lonestar Soccer Club of Austin, Texas, 2-1.
Kathryn Kelley and Chandler Arrowood produced the goals for Charlotte, and Mikaela Harvey put Lonestar on the board.
A key player for Charlotte was goalkeeper Sam Steyl, who saved two penalty kicks.
"I knew they were good, and were going to kick it hard," Steyl said. I just choose a side, and go for it. They were really fast, and did well on the outside. Determination and hard work got us through."
Charlotte improved to 3-3-5, and Lonestar now stands at 6-3-2..
Meanwhile, in the U-16 division, Concorde Fire of Atlanta shut out Real Colorado 4-0.
Three of the goals came in the first half, and two were from sophomore Hannah Hartman.
Hartman's first goal came in a stack play, when she ran to the front post and put the ball away to the far corner. The second goal was also a cross, the ball bounced, and Hartman again fired it to the far post.
"We played them in Seattle, and beat us 1-0," Hartman said. "We wanted to show we could beat them too."
Kim Fincher scored the only goal in the second half of play.
Coach Brian Moore was also pleased with his team's effort.
"This team has had our number the last couple of times we've played," Moore said. "I encouraged our players to get the first goal. They have some dangerous players. I was very pleased with our competitive nature tofay."
Concorde upped its record to 7-2-1, and Real Colorado dropped to 6-2-1.
